Glossary

Quick reference terms used across our Learn section. For depth, start with Digital Engineering and SysML v2.

Digital Engineering

An approach to developing systems where machine-readable models, automation, and reproducible workflows replace or augment document-only processes.

MBSE (model-based systems engineering)

Systems engineering practices centered on formal models as the primary engineering artifacts, enabling analysis, traceability, and integration across disciplines.

MBD (model-based design)

Often used for model-based development of controls and software (e.g. simulation, code generation). Related to MBSE but not the same scope; teams may use both.

SysML v2

The OMG systems modeling language built on KerML, aimed at integrated requirements, structure, behavior, and parametrics for complex systems.

KerML

Kernel Modeling Language — the semantic and syntactic foundation on which SysML v2 is defined.

Digital thread

A connected flow of authoritative data across the lifecycle (design, build, test, operate), so decisions and artifacts stay traceable and consistent.

Digital twin

A live or periodic coupling between a virtual model and a real asset or process — used for monitoring, prediction, and optimization.
